Liposuction is the most effective way of removing excess fat from the chin, upper arms, thighs, bottom, abdomen and hips. The effects are permanent. Any future weight gain will be distributed proportionately over the body. This is also true of weight loss. Fat that has been removed will not return. As liposuction is not intended to be a substitute for slimming, we do recommend that overweight patients lose weight before surgery. However, an improved body shape achieved by liposuction can give some patients the motivation and self-discipline needed to diet successfully. Nowadays, technology and the nature of the procedure itself mean that this can be done on an out-patient basis. A local anaesthetic is used for this procedure, thus eliminating the necessity for a full anaesthetic. In tumescent liposuction (from the Latin tumescere: to inflate) large amounts of a diluted anaesthetic are injected into the targeted areas of fat. Through tiny incisions in the skin, ultrasonic cannulae are used to liquefy the fat and vacuum it out of the body. The removal of these fat cells is permanent - they will not grow back. This method of liposuction developed by Dr. Sattler has very few side effects and causes little trauma to the nerves and blood vessels. After a few weeks the tiny incisions will no longer be visible. As with any surgical procedure, some risks and side effects are possible and will be discussed during your consultation. Light work can be resumed after 1-2 days, more strenuous activities after 3-7 days, depending on the size and location of the liposuction site. We recommend wearing a surgical corset to enhance the healing process. The skin covering the liposuction site will gradually shrink to fit your new shape. Depending on the amount of liposuction performed, you may see a visible improvement in your body shape just one week after surgery. In general it takes about 3-4 months for all of the swelling and bruising to subside. Therefore, the final result will not be visible until approximately 4-6 months after surgery. For patients suffering from typical "orange-peel" skin who are either just slightly overweight or a normal weight, we recommend electrolipolysis as performed in our practice. Further information on this treatment can be obtained from our web page entitled "Cellulite Treatment". Losing weight can be a real problem. Many diets are unsuccessful and encourage the yo-yo effect. Our practice specializes in this field. You can find further information on this topic from our web page entitled "Permanent Weight Loss - Avoiding Yo-yo Dieting". Liposuction is not covered by the German National Health Service. You will be billed as a private patient according to the GOA (German scale of charges for doctors). Information on charges can be obtained in person or during private telephone consultation: 06074/881621, Wednesdays and Fridays, 12.30-1300 hours.
